Admission Requirements and Deadlines

Applications are processed as they are received throughout the year. To guarantee review for a given semester, applications should be submitted prior to the semester's start date for classes.

From Whom: Letters of recommendation should be obtained from individuals who have observed and are able to evaluate your leadership competencies and abilities.

Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:

If necessary, the following prerequisites may be taken in the Summer prior to beginning the master's degree program:

HIM 5001:  Topics in HIM

HIM 5002:  Topics in Clinical Information

HIM 5004:  Introduction to Healthcare Delivery  

Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:

A baccalaureate degree or its equivalent, as recognized by Temple University, from an accredited post-secondary institution is required. 

Statement of Goals:

The Statement of Goals should address your interest in obtaining the degree and how it will meet your career goals. The essay must demonstrate professional writing ability.

Standardized Test Scores:

The GRE is required. Quantitative and verbal scores on the GRE should be in the 50th percentile or above.

Minimum TOEFL score needed to be accepted: 79 iBT or 550 PBT.

Computer Competency Examination:

A computer competency examination is administered by the HIM Department. Applicants must achieve a passing score of 74% or above.

About the Program

The innovative, interdisciplinary, and state-of-the-art M.S. in Health Informatics program is an applied graduate degree that focuses on the design, development, and implementation of electronic health record (EHR) systems in health care to serve the tenets of patient privacy, quality of care, and research. The M.S. in Health Informatics is designed for physicians, nurses, therapists, health information management practitioners, administrators, and information technology professionals. The program is offered in collaboration with the Department of Management Information Systems in the Fox School of Business and Management.

Time Limit for Degree Completion: 3 years

Full-Time/Part-Time Status:

This program for working professionals is designed for part-time study.  Classes are offered weekday evenings. Although some courses may be offered online, the interaction between disciplines from both the faculty and student perspectives is a key component of the degree's design.

The curriculum meets the curricular requirements of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), which is the accrediting body of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). It is expected that Temple University will have one of the first accredited master's programs in the nation.

Non-Matriculated Student Policy:

Students with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above may be allowed to take classes on a non-matriculated basis. Non-matriculated students may take a maximum of 9 credit hours. Any additional courses require the student to be matriculated in a program.

Financing Opportunities

Students in the HIM program are generally working professionals. Therefore, funding for assistantships and academic internships is limited.
