Kinesiology, M.S.
Concentration: Integrative Exercise Physiology
COLLEGE OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS AND SOCIAL WORK
Admission Requirements and Deadlines
Application Deadline:
Fall: January 15
Spring: October 1
Applications are processed as they are received throughout the year.
APPLY ONLINE to this graduate program.
Letters of Reference:
Number Required: 3
From Whom: Letters of recommendation should be obtained from evaluators, typically college/university faculty or an immediate work supervisor, who can provide insight into the applicant's abilities and talents, as well as comment on her/his aptitude for graduate study.
Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:
It is preferred that applicants have completed laboratory courses in Biology, Chemistry, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and/or Physics.
Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:
A baccalaureate degree or its equivalent, as recognized by Temple University, from an accredited post-secondary institution is required. Admission of students is initially subject to standards set by the Graduate School. The minimum admission standard for all graduate students is an undergraduate grade point average of "B" or 3.0, or the functional equivalent for students who have attended universities outside of the United States. The Department of Kinesiology can request a waiver from the Dean of the Graduate School for a student who has a grade point average below a “B” or 3.0.
Statement of Goals:
The Statement of Goals should be clearly written and well thought out. It should be approximately 1-2 pages in length.
Standardized Test Scores:
The GRE/MAT is required. Scores of 500 each are preferred on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE. Occasionally, students with lower totals are accepted if undergraduate work and/or other life experiences suggest a high degree of probability of success in the graduate program.
Minimum TOEFL score needed to be accepted:
79 iBT or 550 PBT.
Interview:
An interview is scheduled at a mutually convenient time between the faculty interviewer(s) and the applicant. Master's applicants may interview by telephone if an on-campus visit is difficult to arrange.
Resume:
A resume is required.
Transfer Credit:
Relevant graduate courses taken at other accredited universities may be considered for transfer credit to the student's program. The maximum number of credits a student may transfer is 6.

Program Requirements
General Program Requirements:
Number of Didactic Credits Required Beyond the Baccalaureate: 30 or 33
Required Courses:
KINS 5311: Exercise Physiology
KINS 9201: Cardiovascular Exercise Physiology
KINS 9203: Applied Exercise Physiology: Neuromuscular
KINS 9901: Research Methods
Intermediate Statistics Course
Elective Courses (15 to 18 credits from the following):
KINS 5312: Exercise and Nutrient Metabolism
KINS 5313: Exercise and Aging
KINS 9204: Cellular Adaptations to Exercise
KINS 9205: Exercise Testing and Prescription
KINS 9206: Environmental Physiology
Electives may be taken in other departments at Temple to tailor graduate coursework to the interest/skills of the student. Two graduate faculty members must approve the elective course.
Internship: An internship is optional. The Clinical Internship/Practicum is a 150-hour (3 credits) or 300-hour (6 credits) supervised applied experience. It offers students the opportunity to engage in more applied work.
Language Examination: No language examination is required.
Culminating Events:
Master Research Project Option (3 credits of KINS 9995):
The master research project option is a mentored research experience that may result in a publication or a summary document of the research experience. The project option is designed to offer flexibility for students who wish to be actively involved with research but do not want to engage in research at the level expected for a thesis. Evaluation of the project is by a two-person committee as pass/fail.
Thesis (3 credits of KINS 9995 and 3 credits of KINS 9996):
The thesis is designed to demonstrate the student's ability to collect data and present results in a scholarly manner. Students schedule a defense with their three-person committee after the thesis advisor has approved the thesis as ready for defense. Overall evaluation is pass/fail, with recommendations for improvements of the thesis offered as a result of faculty review and discussion at the thesis defense.
Clinical Internship/Practicum Option (3 or 6 credits of KINS 9785):
The Clinical Internship/Practicum is a 150-hour (3 credits) or 300-hour (6 credits) supervised applied experience. Students opting for the 3-credit Clinical Internship/Practicum must also complete KINS 9995 (Master Research Project). The Clinical Internship/Practicum offers students the opportunity to engage in more applied work. Evaluation of the Clinical Internship/Practicum experience is by the major professor, based on a submitted portfolio of materials completed during the experience.

About the Program
The mission of the Department of Kinesiology is to advance comprehensive inquiry into, and understanding of, human movement in all of its forms and implications. The program primarily trains academicians but also clinicians/practitioners in some areas. The program offers an opportunity to engage in coursework as well as research and applied work across a range of sub-disciplines within the discipline of Kinesiology. Central to the mission is the discovery and dissemination of knowledge through a multi-dimensional study of physical activity with special emphasis on the relationships among physical activity, health, and well-being. This approach incorporates biophysical, behavioral, and professional practice perspectives.
