Admission Requirements and Deadlines

Letters of Reference:

From Whom: Letters of recommendation should be obtained from employers, professional colleagues, and/or college faculty members.

Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:

Applicants must complete undergraduate statistics and health assessment courses.

Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:

A baccalaureate degree in Nursing with a GPA of 3.0 OR an R.N. license and a baccalaureate degree in another discipline is needed to apply to the M.S.N. program upon completion of a series of four courses referred to as the “Transition Program” with a GPA of 3.0.

Statement of Goals:

The Statement of Goals should be approximately 500-1,000 words and include the following: the reason for your interest in a graduate degree; why you are interested in Temple's program; and your future career goals.

Standardized Test Scores:

The GRE/MAT is required. Scores are expected to be at or above the 50th percentile. To qualify for a waiver of the GRE or MAT requirement, the applicant must have either an:

• undergraduate GPA greater than 3.25
• cumulative GPA of 3.25 in three graduate core courses if undergraduate GPA is less than or equal to 3.24
• graduate degree in another discipline

Minimum TOEFL score needed to be accepted: 600 paper-based, 250 computer-based, or 100 internet-based.

Resume:

A resume is required.

Transfer Credit:

Graduate credits from an accredited institution may be transferred into the Department of Nursing, Graduate Studies. The course must be equivalent to coursework offered at Temple, and the grade must be a "B" or better to transfer. The decision is made by the Director of the Graduate Program in conjunction with the faculty responsible for the course in question. The maximum number of credits a student may transfer is 6.

Copies of the applicant's nursing license and criminal background and child abuse checks are required.

About the Program

At Temple, nursing education strongly reflects the values and goals of the discipline of Nursing and the broad mission of Temple University. Graduate nursing education prepares the professional nurse to function as an expert in a specialized area of Nursing or as a provider of primary care to clients. The curriculum focuses on the health needs of diverse populations with an emphasis on urban communities. Such education fosters the development of independent and collaborative problem solving in providing care in a variety of settings. The advanced practice roles stress the importance of academic excellence, critical thinking, and the use of scientific knowledge in decision making. The environment promotes intellectual dialogue and fosters individual growth and research in advanced nursing science.

Full-Time/Part-Time Status:

Students are required to complete the degree program through classes offered before and after 4:30 p.m. Students are also able to complete the degree program on a part-time basis (8 credit hours or less per semester).

The Department of Nursing is accredited for 10 years, through 2012, by the Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education.

Areas of Specialization:

A master's degree in Nursing and post master's certificate are offered in the following areas of specialization: Adult Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Educator, and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.

Job Placement:

Graduates of the program are employed in a variety of diverse settings, including both inpatient and outpatient settings affiliated with hospitals and clinics.

Not applicable.

Non-Degree Student Policy:

Nonmatriculated students are able to take a total of 9 graduate credits prior to matriculation. However, students must submit a complete application before registering for their third course. Only core courses N5501, N5553, N5557, and PH5101 may be taken on a nonmatriculated basis.

Financing Opportunities

Funds are available to matriculated students who are in specialty courses and nearing program completion.
