From Whom: Anyone familiar with the applicant's academic competence may
write letters of recommendation. In general, the most common
source of these letters is college/university faculty members.

Statement of Goals:
Applicants should indicate their goals and objectives for obtaining
a master's degree. This statement is evaluated against the
program's mission. A typical goal statement contains the
following items: The student's reason for seeking a master's
degree with a specific focus on the career to which the student
aspires, the student's research interests and academic and
job-related experiences that are relevant to the program.
A typical goal statement is 2 to 3 pages in length.
Standardized Test Scores:
The GRE/MAT is required. While no minimum score for the GRE is
specified, it is expected that the scores will generally
be no less than 500. The department evaluates all components
of the GRE.
In addition, applicants must successfully pass the PRAXIS I examination.
Resume:
A resume is required.
Transfer Credit:
Courses
may be transferred as long as they have
been taken less than five years ago and
are relevant to the program. The academic
advisor makes the decisions about the relevancy
of the courses that the student desires to transfer.
The maximum number of credits a student may transfer
is 6.
Test Waivers:
Each student
is assigned an adviser at the time of admission.
The adviser will review the student's credentials
and determine which, if any, of the required
courses can be waived. In general, this
waiver covers the beginning level courses
in the program. Waiving a specific requirement,
however, does not reduce the total number of credits
needed to graduate.

Practicum and Student Teaching Ed. 413, Ed 406 and Ed 412 (Ed
406 and 412 must taken together) All courses in the program
must be completed before taking supervised Teaching and Seminar
(Ed. 406 & 412) unless students were admitted to an Intern
Certification Program (see below). Requirements for Intern
Certificate.
Internship: No internship is required.
Language Examination: No language examination is required.

About the Program
The Graduate Certification Master of Education
Program (Ed.M.) is intended for students interested
in pursuing state certification simultaneously
with their master's degree. This program prepares
people for careers in education who have not
previously been certified to teach in any
state, with the exception of the Reading specialization.
Individuals seeking a Pennsylvania Intern
and/or Instructional I certificate who hold
a B.S. or B.A. degree in a non-education area
should apply. Applicant already holding an
Instructional I or II certificate, should
see the M.S. in Ed. Program. After completing
supervised teaching and its prerequisites,
passing the relevant sections of the PRAXIS
examinations, and passing a State of Pennsylvania
criminal check, students may be eligible for
a Pennsylvania Intern Certificate. The Intern
Certificate allows the student to teach in
public schools for up to three years. The
Intern Certificate is issued only once and
expires automatically in three years; no extensions
are granted. Upon the successful completion
of all requirements for the degree and certification
requirements, students may apply for a Pennsylvania
Instructional I Teaching Certificate.
Time Limit for Degree Completion: 4 years

program on a part-time basis (8 credit hours
or less per semester).

The Master of Education program is
one of the graduate programs in the College
of Education at Temple. The college was ranked
15th in the nation in the most recent U.S.
News & World Report ranking of graduate
schools.

The program is accredited by NCATE, Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Areas of Specialization:
The Ed.M. prepares students for certification
in five areas: Elementary, Reading, Secondary,
Special Education, and Career and Technical
Education. The subject areas of the Secondary
specialization are English, French, German,
Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish,
Mathematics (beginning with Calculus), Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, General
Science, and Social Studies.
Job Placement:
Graduates typically pursue careers
in education in K-12 educational settings.

Financing Opportunities
All assistantships in this program involve
teaching, or research or lab responsibilities.
A stipend is provided, as is 18 credits
of tuition remission per year. Students who wish to
