Anyone familiar with the applicant's academic competence may write letters of recommendation. In general, the most common source of these letters is college/university faculty members.

Courses an applicant must complete prior to being considered for admission:

Students should have completed an undergraduate degree in career and technical education or a related content area.

Is a bachelor's degree in the discipline or a related discipline required for admission?

Yes. Business Education; Marketing Education; Industrial Education; Technology Education; Family and Consumer Sciences; Agriculture Education.

Statement of Goals:

Applicants should indicate their goals and objectives for obtaining a master's degree. This statement is evaluated against the program's mission. A typical goal statement contains the following items: - The student's reason for seeking a master's degree with a specific focus on the career to which the student aspires. - The student's research interests - Academic and job-related experiences that are relevant to the program. A typical goal statement is 2-3 pages in length.

Standardized Test Scores:

The GRE/MAT is required. Applicants are expected to score in the 50th percentile or above on the MAT or GRE (i.e., a score of 50 on the MAT: a score of 480 on the Verbal, 565 on the Quantitative, and 545 on the analytical section of the GRE). Applicants with a score below the criterion in one area, can compensate with a higher score in another area.

Minimum TOEFL score or range of scores needed to be accepted:
230 on the computer based version (CBT) or 575 on the paper-based version is required for applicants who are not native speakers of English. Applicants who score below 600 on the paper-based test or 250 on the computer-based test will be required to take and pass a remedial English course during their first semester at Temple University.

Transfer Credit

Courses from accredited institutions may be transferred as long as they have been taken no more than five years ago, are graded "B" or better, and are relevant to the program. The academic adviser makes the decision about the relevancy of the courses that the student desires to transfer. The maximum number of credits a student may transfer is 6

Test Waivers:

Each student is assigned an adviser at the time of admission. The adviser will review the student's credentials and determine which, if any, of the required courses can be waived. In general, this waiver covers the beginning level courses in the program. Waiving a specific requirement, however does not reduce the total number of credits needed to graduate.

Required Courses:
Required Core Courses: ED 554, 650, 652, 653, ED PSY 529, CTE 501 and 507, and nine elective credits, which will be determined in consultation with the academic advisor.

Nine credits of electives are needed which will be determined in consultation with the academic advisor.

Internship:
Yes, an internship is required. The internship requirement is designed in collaboration with the student's adviser.

Language Examination:
No language examination is required.

Event Description - The capstone requirement is generally scoped as a clinical, field-based, or in-school experience.

Event Process - Students are required to develop a professional portfolio and participate in a performance evaluation.

About the Program

The Master of Science in Education is available for students who are already certified and/or have a master's degree. It is a graduate level teacher enhancement program for certified B.S./B.A./Ed.M. professionals seeking to upgrade their content area and/or develop new skills leading to educational opportunities such as: master/lead teacher, curriculum developer, peer counselor, and/or instructional/team leader. The M.S. in Ed. is an advanced degree, preparing professionals for higher level positions within the school system and/or a more in-depth knowledge of one's field.

The Master of Science in Education in Career and Technical Education is one of the graduate programs in the College of Education at Temple. The College was ranked 19th in the nation in the most recent U.S. News and World Report ranking of graduate schools.

Areas of Specialization:

The areas of concentration are: Business, Computer, and Information Technology; Marketing Education, and Industrial Education. CITE also offers a general option in the M.S. in Ed. which allows the department and students to design specialized programs within the discipline and to provide specialized programs requested by neighboring school districts and individual students.

The program has a strong interdisciplinary focus. In addition the program provides opportunities in a wide variety of educational settings: formal and informal; public and private; schools, businesses and industries.

Financing Opportunities

All assistantships in this program involve teaching, or research or lab responsibilities. The stipend for the 2003 - 2004 academic year is $13,253.94. Students receive 18 credits of tuition per year.
