Admission Requirements and Deadlines

From Whom: Letters of recommendation should be obtained from employers, professional colleagues, college faculty members.

Coursework Required forAdmission Consideration:

Applicants must complete an undergraduate statistics and health assessment course.

Bachelor's Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:

Yes. BSN with a minimum of one year critical care experience.

Statement of Goals:

The Goal Statement should be approximately 500-1,000 words and include the following: reason for your interest in a graduate degree; why you are interested in Temple's program, and your future career goals.

Standardized Test Scores:

The GRE/MAT is required. Acceptable Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller's Analogy Test (MAT) scores, achieved within the last five years. The College of Allied Health Professions expects GRE or MAT scores at or above the 50th percentile.

Minimum TOEFL score or range of scores needed to be accepted: 575 on the paper-based test or 230 on the computer-based test. Applicants who score below 600 on the paper-based test or 250 on the computer-based test will be required to take and pass a remedial English course during their first semester at Temple University.

A resume is required.

Transfer Credit:

Graduate credits from an accredited institution may be transferred into the Department of Nursing, Graduate Studies. The course must be equivalent to coursework offered at Temple and the grade must be a "B" or better to transfer. The decision is made by the director of the Graduate Program in conjunction with the faculty member responsible the course in question. The maximum number of credits a student may transfer is 6.

A copy of the applicant's Nursing License is required.

Core courses are offered on the TUCC and HSC campuses. Specialty courses are offered on the HSC except for Nurse Anesthesia. Specialty courses in the Nurse Anesthesia track are offered at Pennsylvania Hospital.

Students are required to complete the degree program through classes offered before and after 4:30 p.m.

Students earn a total of 15 credits in nursing core courses, 6 credts in research, and 25 credits in the nurse anesthesia specialty.

About the Program

At Temple, nursing education strongly reflects the values and goals of the discipline of nursing and the broad mission of Temple University. Graduate nursing education prepares the professional nurse to function as an expert in a specialized area of nursing or as a provider of primary care to clients. The curriculum focuses on the health needs of diverse populations with an emphasis on urban communities. Such education fosters the development of independent and collaborative problem solving in providing care in a variety of settings. The advanced practice roles stress the importance of academic excellence, critical thinking, and the use of scientific knowledge in decision making. The environment promotes intellectual dialogue and fosters individual growth and research in advanced nursing science.

Areas of Specialization:

A master's degree in nursing is offered in the following areas of specialization: Psychiatric Mental Health (PMH), Nurse Anesthesia (NA), Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP), Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP), and Maternal Newborn Faculty are actively involved in research related to urban health problems, family dynamics, cardiovalscular risk factors, critical thinking, clinical leadership, and a variety of chronic health problems.

Job Placement:

Graduates of the program are employed in a variety of diverse settings including both inpatient and outpatient settings affiliated with hospitals and clinics.

Non-Degree Student Policy:

Non matriculated students are able to take a total of 9 graduate credits prior to matriculation. However, students must submit a complete application before registering for a third course. Only core courses may be taken as a nonmatriculated student, that is, N553, N554, N555 or N557.

Financing Opportunities

The Department typically has one Teaching Assistant per academic year. This individual assists with undergraduate laboratory teaching and tutoring, outcome data collection for program evaluation and research related activities as requested by individual faculty. The committment is for 20 hours of work per week in exchange for full-time tuition scholarship and a stipend. Students will be contacted in June regarding the application process for a September appointment.
