Admission Requirements and Deadlines

Application Deadline:

Applications reviewed on a rolling basis.

Letters of Reference:

Number Required: 3

From Whom: Recent graduates should have at least two letters of recommendation from college/university faculty members familiar with academic performance. Others should ensure that letters are from professional colleagues and that they address academic abilities.

Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:

Applicants should preferably have a bachelor's degree in a natural science, engineering, or other area related to the program curriculum.

Statement of Goals:

The Statement of Goals should explain your interest in Temple's program, any relevant professional experience, your career goals, your academic achievements, and any professional achievements.

Standardized Test Scores:

The GRE is required. Successful applicants typically score above the 50th percentile on the verbal and quantitative sections.

Minimum TOEFL score or range of scores needed to be accepted: 620 on the paper-based test or 260 on the computer-based test.

Resume:

A resume is required.

Transfer Credit:

Graduate credits from an accredited institution may be transferred into the Environmental Health program. The credits must be equivalent to coursework offered at Temple and the grade must be a "B" or better in order to transfer. The maximum number of credits a student may transfer is 8.

Additional Requirements:

Students without relevant work experience complete an internship. Those with relevant work experience complete an independent project that demonstrates integration of program content.

About the Program

The Department of Public Health offers graduate study leading to the Master of Science degree in Environmental Health, with concentrations in Occupational Health and in Environmental Health. The Occupational Health concentration focuses on worker health and safety. It emphasizes the application of basic scientific and engineering principles to recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace health and safety hazards. The Environmental Health concentration focuses on the broader community environment and deals with the evaluation, control, and mitigation of environmental pollution.

Students are required to complete the degree program through classes offered before and after 4:30 p.m. Students are able to complete the degree program on a part-time basis (8 credit hours or less per semester).

Ranking:

The program is the only one of its kind in the region, and one of a relatively small group nationally. Faculty are internationally recognized for their leadership. Program graduates routinely attain professional certification in industrial hygiene

Areas of Specialization:

Faculty members offer substantial coursework and research opportunities in environmental and occupational health, including specialization in air pollution control, ergonomics, exposure analysis,industrial hygiene, and radiological health.

Job Placement:

Graduates are recruited to work as practioners in government, military, private sector, and academic environments.

Affiliation(s):

The Environmental Health program has research and training affiliations with numerous private companies and public sector agencies in the Philadelphia region.

Interdisciplinary Study:

The program encourages interdisciplinary coursework, research, and interactions among faculty and students with interests in environmental health. Focal areas include other allied health professions, and applied science and engineering.

Non-Degree Student Policy:

Non-matriculated students may take as many as 9 credit hours of coursework, with permission of the program director. These credit hours may be applied toward degree requirements upon matriculation.

Financing Opportunities

Teaching Assistant (TA): The principal duties of a Teaching Assistant include assisting faculty members in classroom and laboratory instruction, preparing apparatus or material for demonstration, conducting tutorials and discussion sections, and grading quizzes. Teaching Assistantships include a stipend and full tuition remission (as many as 9 credits) per semester. Applications are available from the department. The department makes offers of assistantships on or before April 1. Applications should be directed to Dr. Hausman, Chairperson, Department of Public Health, and include a statement of previous teaching and/or research experience, areas of interest, and future goals; unofficial transcripts; and a curriculum vitae.
